First, take your black stretch fabric and cut

Cut two rectangles from your stretch fabric.
How do you adjust the length of your DIY socks? Just measure from the tip of your toes to where you’d like the top of your stockings to land. Since I wanted mine to be long and dramatic, I made them 42″ long, but you can decide how long you want yours. To make a standard sock sewing pattern, you may want it to be around 12″ long instead..
Custom Sizing Tips:
- Add ½” seam allowance for whatever length you choose so it ends up being the right length by the end
- For crew socks, cut to ~12” long.
- For knee-highs, try 18–24”.

The extra “give” created with a zig-zag stitch will give your stretchy fabric the ability to stretch even more and move without popping your seams. Just be sure to use a narrow zig-zag stitch for extra comfort.
So to be extra clear for your convenience:

- Using a sewing machine? Choose a narrow zig-zag stitch instead of a straight stitch. This allows for stretch and comfort.
